AHA! Summer Meeting, Thursday, July 10

The summer meeting of the Archivists of the Houston Area will be held Thursday, July  10th  at 6 pm, at the University of Houston Special Collections at the MD Anderson Library (2nd floor). Jim Parsons, Director of Special Projects at Preservation Houston,  will be our featured guest speaker as he talks about Archival Discoveries from the Texas Centennial Exposition.

Directions and Parking:

 

If coming from the north/downtown, take I-45 South. Take exit 44-B. Merge toward Spur 5 South. Turn right onto University Drive. Turn left on Calhoun and you will immediately see the Welcome Center & Parking Garage, a yellow brick building with red trim.

 

If coming from the south, take I-45 North. Take exit 44-A (Elgin/Lockwood/Cullen). Turn left on Cullen. Drive along Cullen, passing the stadium, and turn left on Wheeler. Turn left again on Calhoun. To your left just past the parking lot you will see the Welcome Center & Parking Garage, a yellow brick building with red trim.

 

Once you’ve parked, walk in towards the center of campus. You will pass the Hilton Hotel on your left and the University Center (student center) on your right. You will find yourself behind the M.D. Anderson Library, a large cream-colored building. You must go around to the front of the building to enter the Library. Head back to the main circular staircase, and take that, or one of the elevators behind it, up to the 2nd floor.

 

Special Collections is at the top of the stairs through the glass door.

The Great War and the Making of the Modern World

Lone Star College is organizing the Second Annual History Day to examine World War I and how to teach it in the classroom. The day long event is being held Thursday, June 19. AHA! Announces its Spring Meeting

DAS Workshop: Achieving Email Account Preservation with XML

Course Description

How do you successfully manage and preserve e-mail? Your instructor will examine two XML schemas developed for e-mail account archival preservation: the E-Mail Account Preservation schema and the PeDALS schema. The EMAP schema co-authored by the Electronic Mail Collaboration Initiative and the Collaborative Electronic Records Project serves as the backbone of two open source email account preservation tools. One of the benefits of using the EMAP schema is effective, efficient preservation of e-mail accounts and their messages. The schema can be used in trustworthy repositories to validate deposited e-mail accounts, and can also be adopted as a professional standard like METS and EAD. The PeDALS schema originated in a grant project involving seven state archives. The PeDALS schema is specifically geared towards Microsoft Outlook .pst files and their content. This course discusses both of these schemas as well as the advantages and disadvantages of each of them.

Upon completion of this course you’ll be able to:

  • Explain – why use XML;
  • Identify the tools for XML and for parsing;
  • Anticipate the preparation necessary before preservation;
  • Assess e-mail account and message condition;
  • Master the breakdown of the schema and its application to e-mail accounts;
  • Recognize why the instructors take the account-level approach; and,
  • Develop ways to use the schema and related tools at your own organization.

Who should attend?Archivists, records managers, and librarians who are or will be handling e-mail and other electronic records.

What Should You Know? Some understanding of XML/HTML, such as recognizing the basic structure of an XML document, is useful!

Participants must bring a laptop (PC only, no Macs) with a CD drive or USB port for “hands-on” experience. You are strongly encouraged to download the CERP parser from the CERP website at http://www.siarchives.si.edu/cerp/parserdownload.htm and review the installation guide prior to the course.

Outside the Lines exhibit opens tonight at Contemporary Arts Museum Houston

Outside the Lines exhibit opens tonight at the Contemporary Arts Museum Houston on the occasion of its 65th anniversary. The six-part exhibition, “conceived as an evolving dialogue on contemporary abstraction”, draws from the CAMH’s archive. (The CAMH archive is maintained by the MFAH Archives).

University of Houston Libraries is hosting an upcoming webinar in the Digital Archives Specialist (DAS) curriculum.

Electronic Records—the Next Step! (Webinar)
