The University of Houston Libraries are seeking a progressive and forward thinking leader prepared to articulate a vision and direction for a growing special collections and archives that supports the University’s objectives of advancing research, improving student success, and increasing national recognition.  The Libraries’ Special Collections enhances the traditional strengths of a rare books and archives department with a growing number of contemporary collections that reflect the vitality and diversity of the City of Houston.  The position provides direction and oversight to a group of 6 librarians, 4 regular staff members, and 2 post-doctoral staff members curating archival collections and rare books.  The Head oversees the ongoing development of archival collections, work with academic departments, preparation of collections for digitization, and a full calendar of exhibits.  There is frequent contact with established donors and potential donors for acquisitions of unique collections, as well as fundraising and management of departmental endowments.  The Head of Special Collections serves as a member of the Library Management Council, the Public Services Council, and the Digital Collections Management Committee.  The Head of Special Collections holds the Emily Scott Evans Endowed Professorship. Responsibilities:

• Works with the Director of the Kitty King Powell Library and Study Center and the Curator of the Bayou Bend Collection to establish and implement vocabulary and metadata standards for the Texas Artisans & Artists Archive (TAAA)

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

• Able to prioritize, work with minimum supervision and deal with both public and staff in a professional manner

Position Available: 2013 Summer Archives Assistant, Museum of Fine Arts, Houston

The Museum of Fine Arts, Houston (MFAH) is seeking a Summer Archives Assistant to aid in the daily operation of the museum’s archives. Half of the assistant’s hours will be devoted to the processing of MFAH exhibition records.   Work will be conducted in accordance with standard conventions. In conjunction with the processing of these records, the assistant will assist with the creation of an EAD finding aid and MARC catalog record.  Remaining responsibilities will include providing reference services and assisting with other duties necessary to the operation of the Archives Department. The Summer Archives Assistant is invited to attend behind-the-scene tours and lectures hosted by the Education Department.

Requirements:  Current enrollment in accredited Masters in Library Science or Archives Studies program. Completion of basic archives course at graduate level or prior work experience in archival or special collection setting. Knowledge of MARC, DACS, LCSH and AACR2 strongly preferred. Experience using OCLC beneficial. Art history background preferred. Word processing and database skills. Ability to lift twenty-five pound boxes and climb ladders.

The Houston Academy of Medicine – Texas Medical Center Library is seeking a project archivist to arrange, process and make accessible to the public a manuscript collection. This project is funded by the generous donation of the patron who donated the collection. The project archivist will be responsible for processing and describing a collection related to the life of a medical doctor, researcher, and teacher. The position will report to the archivist heading the TMC Library’s John P. McGovern Historical Collections and Research Center. This project is estimated to require approximately 300 hours for completion.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Master of Library Science or equivalent degree from an accredited institution
  • Demonstrated experience with archival principles and practices based on the standards of the Society of American Archivists. 

Preferred:

Qualifications (Knowledge, Skills, Abilities):

  • Demonstrated proficiency with Microsoft Office suite.
  • Familiarity with the standards, Describing Archives: A Content Standard (DACS) and Encoded Archival Description (EAD).
  • Familiarity or proficiency with archive management systems, such as Archon, Archivist Toolkit or the new ArchivesSpace is a plus.
  • Awareness of best archival practices is essential, including knowledge of digital archival practices, such as preservation, metadata and digitization.
  • Demonstrated written and verbal communication skills. The applicant should have the ability to work with minimal supervision, supervise staff and volunteers, work closely with patrons and donors, and achieve mutually agreed upon goals.

Education and Experience:

Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA-Accredited program with some classes in archival science or an archival track; or an equivalent master’s degree in archival studies or related field. Some experience in an archival setting required.
Favorable consideration will be given to candidates with an Archivist Certification through the Academy of Certified Archivists.
