Job posting: Coordinator of Digital Projects, University of Houston Libraries

The University of Houston Libraries is looking for a Coordinator of Digital Projects. The Coordinator of Digital Projects reports to the Head of Special Collections.  Primary responsibilities include managing the internal workflow for the department’s digital library projects and supervising assigned personnel.  The Coordinator leads departmental efforts, in collaboration with other UH Libraries departments to preserve, process, and provide access to audiovisual and digital materials, including born-digital materials.  The Coordinator also serves as Special Collections Department liaison to the Metadata & Digitization Services, Digital Repository Services, and Web Services departments.

The Coordinator of Digital Projects is a librarian position.  Librarians hold academic rank pursuant to the Bylaws of the Librarians of the University of Houston.  They are expected to develop a record of service and professional involvement.  The UH Libraries support the ongoing professional development of librarians and our goal is to recruit librarians committed to continuous learning.

Required

  • Master’s degree from an ALA-accredited library program
  • Demonstrated ability to develop workflows for complex projects
  • Understanding of digitization processes, digital collection workflows metadata schemas, and digital asset management systems
  • Knowledge of archival theory and best practices
  • Familiarity with trends in arrangement, description, preservation, and access for audiovisual and digital materials
  • Ability to work effectively, cooperatively, and collaboratively with a variety of individuals and groups across the organization
  • Excellent oral, interpersonal, and written communication skills

Preferred

  • Minimum of two years relevant professional experience
  • Supervisory experience
  • Digital Archives Specialist certificate or similar coursework or training
  • Knowledge of copyright and privacy issues related to archival materials
  • Experience digitizing archival and special collections materials

The University of Houston Libraries are seeking a progressive and forward thinking leader prepared to articulate a vision and direction for a growing special collections and archives that supports the University’s objectives of advancing research, improving student success, and increasing national recognition.  The Libraries’ Special Collections enhances the traditional strengths of a rare books and archives department with a growing number of contemporary collections that reflect the vitality and diversity of the City of Houston.  The position provides direction and oversight to a group of 6 librarians, 4 regular staff members, and 2 post-doctoral staff members curating archival collections and rare books.  The Head oversees the ongoing development of archival collections, work with academic departments, preparation of collections for digitization, and a full calendar of exhibits.  There is frequent contact with established donors and potential donors for acquisitions of unique collections, as well as fundraising and management of departmental endowments.  The Head of Special Collections serves as a member of the Library Management Council, the Public Services Council, and the Digital Collections Management Committee.  The position reports to the Associate Dean for Public Services.  The position is available February 2, 2015.

Job posting: Archivist I (Architectural Archives) – Houston Metropolitan Research Center

The Houston Metropolitan Research Center (HMRC) and the Houston Public Library are seeking a customer service oriented Archivist I to lead and direct HMRC’s efforts in researching, acquiring, cataloging, digitizing, and preserving material for the Architectural Archives. HMRC’s Architectural Archives is comprised of drawings and papers for over 9,000 projects representing over 250 architects, engineers, and related firms. The archive includes drawings executed by architects primarily in the Houston and surrounding areas. The date range for these materials spans from 1893 to 1995 and the types of structures vary from buildings of one story to skyscrapers and modest homes to opulent mansions, as well as parks and landscaping plans, the Astrodome, and the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Major series of records from architectural firms include those of Maurice J. Sullivan, Alfred C. Finn, Harvin C. Moore, MacKie & Kamrath, and Hare & Hare. Additional responsibilities include:

  • Providing specialized reference services and research assistance to the general public in-person and electronically.
  • Assisting with HMRC’s programming and community outreach by serving as a community liaison, developing programs, attending community meetings, curating exhibits, and representing the library and HMRC at public events related to architecture and Houston and Texas history.
  • Participating with the manager and assistant manager in unit strategic planning to meet changing services and customer needs including the supervision of interns and volunteers assisting with the Architectural Archives.

Job posting: Archivist I, African American Library at the Gregory School

The African American Library at the Gregory School is seeking an Archivist I. This is a great opportunity to define and manage the oral history collections in a way that creates optimal value for the library and its customers and assist with the archival development for the African American Library at the Gregory School. This archival library is an Archeological landmark in Texas that is dedicated to documenting the community traditions and history of African Americans in Houston through special collections, archives, exhibits, oral histories, programs and a variety of media. The Library is located in historic Freedman’s Town and housed in the Gregory School building, the first African American public school in Houston..

This position is responsible for the development of the oral history collection and will manage the project to include building partnerships with outside agencies and businesses with historical collections of interest. The focus of the work is to positively impact library visits, program attendance and archival use. The Archivist I reports to the Archivist III (and Manager) and works as a contributing team member of the unit, and may lead the work of volunteers and staff on oral history projects. Performs advanced-level reference work to assist researchers in identifying and using archival collections and other library materials; interprets and enforces library policies for the security and administration of the collections; as appropriate, collaborates with the team to mount exhibitions that highlight archival collections. Provides excellent customer service demonstrating the ability to communicate effectively with people.

Other responsibilities include reference duties answering research questions pertaining to archival materials and programs, retrieval of requested archival collections, and assisting the Archivist team in inventorying, processing, and inputting data into Archivists Toolkit, newly acquired materials. The Archivist I is also expected to conduct tours, help with planning special programs, and assist, as required, with the editing, publishing and distribution of library publications. Requires some evening shift and weekend (Saturday and Sunday) work.

Job posting: Archivist/Assistant Librarian – Moran Library, Kinkaid School

The Kinkaid School is seeking an experienced archivist/assistant librarian for the successful execution of archival processing of physical and born-digital records.  This full-time position reports to the Director of Libraries in the Upper School Division and also shares in the responsibilities of managing aspects of the Upper School Library, including educational sessions for students and faculty.

Archivist/Assistant Librarian, Moran Library (Upper School)

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Manage the institutional repository of the school and assist in the maintenance of school wide records retention program.
  • Work with staff throughout the school to support the use and promotion of archival materials.
  • Support the needs of the Advancement Office.
  • Follow national standards and best practices for archival description, process and arrange institutional records, recommend and implement appropriate preservation procedures, work with Archon software to generate encoded finding aids.
  • Create and manage procedures specifically for the preservation of born digital and digitized archival records.
  • Assist with reference responsibilities and other aspects of supporting an effective and efficient Upper School library.
  • Train and supervise volunteers assigned to assist with projects.
  • Remain competent and current through self-directed professional reading, and attending professional development courses and trainings.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Master of Library Science degree from an accredited institution, specializing in archival enterprise.
  • Demonstrated experience with standard archival principles and practices, preferably within an institutional repository
  • Certification from the Academy of Certified Archivist, or Digital Archives Specialist preferred.
  • Experience with Archon, Archivists’ Toolkit, or ArchivesSpace or other XML database.
  • Interest in the history of The Kinkaid School and preserving its institutional memory.

Responsibilities:

• Works with the Director of the Kitty King Powell Library and Study Center and the Curator of the Bayou Bend Collection to establish and implement vocabulary and metadata standards for the Texas Artisans & Artists Archive (TAAA)
• Contributes to the selection and implementation of appropriate systems to manage and distribute data, documents, and images in the Archive
• Coordinates the collection of documents, data, and images for the Archive and their entry into the appropriate systems
• Works closely with MFAH staff in the Hirsch Library, Information Technology, Archives, and Photographic and Imaging Services in the selection, implementation, and maintenance of the systems
• Supervises the Project Associate and future Project staff when hired, including Field Researchers
• Coordinates permissions for the use of any copyrighted data or images in the Archive.
• Works with the Director in exploring possible cooperative contributions of data and images with other institutions
• Reads primary documents with accuracy and comprehension in order to add new information to the Archive
• Enters data, images, subject descriptors, and metadata into the system
• Coordinates communications with the TAAA Advisory Board and their meetings
• Develops and coordinates the Archive´s digital and printed communications
• Assists in promoting scholarly awareness and utilization of the Archive and dissemination of related research
• Performs other duties as assigned

Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities:

• Must have excellent skills in dealing with the museum staff, docents, researchers, and public visitors

• Knowledge of digital content management systems, metadata schema, and controlled vocabularies required

• Knowledge of American art and decorative arts and appropriate library resources desirable

• Able to prioritize, work with minimum supervision and deal with both public and staff in a professional manner

• Dependability, strong communication skills and great attention to detail are essential

• Excellent organizational skills

• Must be physically able to lift heavy books, climb ladders, and work at a computer terminal for extended periods of time


Education and Experience:

• B.A. degree in a Humanities field required

• Masters in Library and Information Science from an ALA-accredited program or archival certification preferred

• Thorough knowledge of archival management principles and methodologies preferred

• Relevant work experience in a library or archive is required
