The African American Library at the Gregory School is an archival and special collections library that is dedicated to documenting the community traditions and history of African Americans in Houston. The Houston Public Library system seeks a creative, innovative, knowledgeable, and highly customer service oriented Archivist II to assist the African American Library. The Archivist II assists in researching, acquiring, cataloging, and preserving archival materials. Provide reference and retrieval services for the general public. Provide information on library services, activities, facilities, and policies. Process, organize, and arrange collections in accordance with professional standards. Contribute to the management of unit records and collections to improve public access. May assist with implementation of the Houston Public Library’s Digitization Program. Participate in outreach efforts including tours and special programs. The Archivist II may also assist with supervision of support staff, interns, and volunteers as well as perform other duties as assigned. Requires some evening and weekend work.

Minimum Educational Requirements:
Requires an ALA accredited Master’s degree in Library Science or a Master’s degree in History or another closely related field.

Minimum Experience Requirements:
One year of experience in archival processing, collecting or research, historical research, library systems, or a closely related field is required.

University Archivist

Responsibilities: Reporting to the Head of Special Collections, the University Archivist serves as the administrator of the University Archives. Projects vision and leadership in managing a unit that functions collaboratively, establishing unified goals with other departmental units in a team-based environment. Serves as the University Archives’ chief advocate, working effectively with a broad constituency of administrators, donors, selected faculty and students. Manages acquisition, processing, access and marketing of traditional and born-digital archival collections and university publications. Participates broadly in the creation, development, and maintenance of department web pages. Hires, trains and supervises the work of archival processors, managing annual budgetary expenditures relating to University Archives and its personnel. Provides reference service for University Archives and other collections.

Salary: $58,000 to $62,000 expected hiring range, depending on qualifications. Comprehensive benefits package; choice of retirement programs including TIAA-CREF; tax-deferred annuity program available; release time to take a class up to 3 hours/week; no state or local income tax.

Manages acquisition, processing, access and marketing of archival collections and may develop new collecting areas. Hires, trains and supervises the work of staff and student processors. Provides reference service for the collections.

Job posting: Stark Foundation Archivist

The Nelda C. and H.J. Lutcher Stark Foundation needs an archivist to establish a brand new archive of foundation materials that include historical family, community and business records and objects, some dating back to the 1800’s, as well as current business records.

The foundation has several hundred square feet that the successful candidate will be responsible for evaluating and creating an archives program based on best practices.  The archivist will manage and operate all aspects of the archive including archival processing, preservation, development of an accessibility plan, etc.  The work will be completed in the context of a private organization environment, which also has an affiliated museum, and the archivist will be expected to interface well with curators/museum staff, foundation board members, and community visitors.  The preferred candidate will have experience with or knowledge of records management regulations and be vigilant in protecting the interests of the foundation and family name.

Job posting: Historian/Archivist, Mouthwatering Media on behalf of Rice University’s Centennial Celebration

Historian/Archivist for Documentary

This two-month part-time project resource assists Mouth Watering Media’s documentary filmmaker by researching and sourcing archival materials including moving footage in support of a 30-60 minute documentary on the intertwined histories of Rice University and the city of Houston, potentially covering the topics of Athletics, the Built Environment (Engineering, Architecture, Construction & Development), Business/Economy, Culture (Art including Menil & MFAH, Music including Shepherd School of Music and Houston Symphony, Theater), and Science & Technology (e.g., NASA, nanotechnology, Texas Medical Center).

Familiarity with the archives at both the Woodson Research Center (Rice University) and the Houston Metropolitan Research Center is desired. Knowledge of written and photographic archival materials as well as archival moving footage is required. Experience with obtaining archival rights is preferred.

Also coordinates tracking use and ordering of supplies, as well as other administrative duties as assigned.

Requires a thorough understanding of both theoretical and practical aspects of an analytical, technical or professional discipline; or the basic knowledge of more than one professional discipline. The Houston Academy of Medicine – Texas Medical Center (HAM-TMC) Library seeks an Archivist.  This individual will be responsible for the physical security and environment of the historical collections (photographs, archives, manuscripts, and books) housed in the Historical Research Center (HRC).  He or she will also offer reference support and assistance to Library clients, arrange and process archival collections, and prepare and manage the budget for the HRC.

Preferred candidate will possess Archivist Certification through Academy of Certified Archivists.
