Archives Week Planning Meeting

Volunteers sought for the following areas:
1.) Organizing an archives-related exhibit at one of the Harris County Libraries.
2.) Giving a brief presentation at one of the Harris County Libraries, probably on a Saturday any weekend in October.
Topics might include genealogy, local history, archives research skills, preservation, oral history, and so on.
3.) Participating in AHA's portion of the Houston Genealogical Forum program tentatively set for Oct. 8th.

Brenda Gunn discussed the little diary that caused such a stink among Alamo idolators.
Does the stink still stick? AHA members and area students heard about the controversy surrounding Jose Enrique de la Pena's narrative of the Battle of the Alamo and the personalities that grew out of all the fuss.

  • Commitment to holding SSA Annual Mtg. in Houston in 2008 -- AHA has been approached by SSA
  • Discussion of purchasing web domain name for AHA so that web name is easier/shorter & maintenance is centralized
  • Planning our Dec. meeting/elections/party

Photographic Collections - Best Practice for Preservation and Digitization

Special Guest Speaker: Linda Peterson, Photographs Archivist, Center for American History, Univ. of Texas at Austin.
Linda Peterson will provide a presentation on the care and feeding of archival photographic materials. She tends the famous Bailey Bros. Houston Photo Collection and will be willing to answer questions about the state of processing and possible access.

    Program: "Developing Best Practice for Archives Websites"
    Web presentation by Pat Bozeman and Julie Grob, University of Houston, demonstrating changes made from their previous website to their new website.
    Presentation by Mandy York, Rice University, proposing a collaborative effort to create some "best practice guidelines" for archives websites. (PDF file of presentation available here.)
