HMRC Conservation and Preservation program, July 26

WHO: The Friends of the Texas Room (of the Julia Ideson Library, downtown), present their quarterly meeting, free and open to the public.

WHAT: Laney McAdow and Mary McMillen (both on staff at the Houston Metropolitan Research Center) will speak on the conservation and preservation of books, documents, letters, newspapers, leather, and photographs and conduct a brief demonstration of techniques for preserving the life of these kinds of materials.

Mrs. McMillen worked 25 years in the Harvard University Library System, including 16 years as collections conservator at the Graduate School of Education. She studied bookbinding and conservation at the North Bennet Street School in Boston, and is a member of AIC and The Guild of Bookworkers.

WHEN: Monday, July 26, 2010, 6:30pm reception, 7pm program

(between Waugh Drive and Montrose, one block south of West Dallas)
Free parking is available in the lot across the street or in the small lot on the left, adjacent to the Museum building.

AHA General Meeting, July 15

WHO: JoAnn Pospisil, archivist and director, Baylor College of Medicine Archives

WHAT: JoAnn will present on the topic of oral history. In addition to local, regional and national archivist societies, JoAnn is a member of the Texas Oral History Association. She has extensive experience with oral history work (such as the Library of Congress Veterans History Project, the Quilters’ Save our Stories Project and various family history projects) and training others to conduct successful interviews.

Refreshments will be provided.

AHA general meeting

WHO: Vince Lee, archivist at the Gregory School, will be the featured speaker at the AHA! general meeting at 5:30pm, Wednesday, March 24.

WHAT: The African American Library at the Gregory School is the new archive in town, having officially opened its doors November 14, 2009. Come hear about Houston Public Library’s newest special collections and tour the renovated facility which formerly served as the first public school for African Americans in Houston.

WHEN: 5:30-6:45pm, Wednesday, March 24, 2010

Please pardon the early start time, which is necessary because of the hour the building closes. We will socialize and enjoy light refreshments for a bit to allow more time for attendees to arrive for the program and finish promptly by 6:45pm.

Directions to July 9 meeting at WRC

A reminder that our next AHA! meeting is today Thursday, July 9th, at the Woodson Research Center at Rice. The Woodson opens it doors to AHA at 4:30 p.m., we will begin eating between 5 and 5:30 with the meeting starting about 6:30. Information about parking and and a campus map is included below.

Our speaker will be Lena Le Moal, a professional bookbinder and graduate of the Lycée Tolbiac, a bookbinding and book conservation school in Paris. Lena has also worked in the book lab at the Harry Ransom Center and is now teaching at the Houston Museum of Printing History. She will talk about the different steps in evaluating damage to a book, tips on handling them, decisions to make as far as the type of repair, the budget, the options and the right people to call. Learn about what you can do yourself or techniques easy to learn, as well as what you should not do. Proper material for conservation will also be discussed.

AHA! will provide sandwich fixings, drinks, and tableware. Sides and desserts will be potluck.
We look forward to seeing everyone there!

Joel Draut to shows HMRC photos at AHA meeting

Joel Draut, a photojournalist and archivist, will be the featured speaker at the
AHA! general meeting at 6 p.m. Wednesday, April 22.

Joel is best known as the professional who curates the rich photographic
resources at the Houston Metropolitan Research Center (HMRC). The HMRC has the
most extensive collection of images about Houston. He will talk about current
digitization efforts at the HMRC and show photographs from the collection.
